The New York Times Best Seller list is a popular list of best selling books of the week, published in The New York Times Book Review magazine since April 9, 1942. The magazine is released along with the sunday edition of The New York Times, but is also available independently.
The books are selected for the list by the “News Surveys” department based on weekly sales reports from a selection of bookstores and wholesalers throughout the United States, mostly including books sold at retail. The precise method used to select the books for the best-seller list is kept as a trade secret to prevent manipulation.
The list is categorized by fiction and non-fiction, print books and e-books, paperback and hardcover. Since 1984 they also include Advice, How-to and Miscellaneous lists, and since 2000 The Children’s Best Sellers list because these types of books were crowding the traditional lists. Each category contains about 10-15 books.
Books which get on the best sellers list can benefit from an even further increase of sales, especially for authors which were previously not well known.
The current New York Times Best Sellers lists are available online at the New York Times web site. Below we include the number one best selling fiction and non-fiction books from the past up until January 2012, organized by year from earliest to latest.
