During the american civil war what we know as the United States of America was split into Union States and Confederate states. All Union States except five at the border with the Confederacy were against slavery while the Confederate states were still supporting slavery. This lists the Union States which were free of slavery, those which still had slavery, and territories which weren’t part of the Union.
